An exhibition dedicated to the Russian artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985), his relationship with the Jewish religion and his very personal way of reinterpreting the Bible Message in pictorial form will be held in the extraordinary setting of the Complesso Monumentale del San Giovanni, in Catanzaro from the 23rd of May to the 29th of August. Curated by Domenico Piraina, the exhibition Chagall. The Bible features 170 graphic works by Marc Chagall and is equipped with ample educational materials on Biblical and Chagallian themes, Judaism in Calabria and the influence of Jewish art on contemporary culture. In fact, artworks by two famous contemporary artists, Max Marra e Antonio Pujia are also displayed to complete this rich and brand-new exhibition layout. By means of the Bible series in black and white and colour and the Story of the Exodus, the exhibition Chagall. The Bible, intends to highlight the ‘secret’ that the artist wished to transmit, the rationale behind his choices, his approach to the ‘Book’ and to illustrate how he believes that the Bible is above all a story of mankind, patriarchs and prophets, kings and queens, spouses and shepherds: Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, Rebecca, Rachel, Joseph, Moses and Aaron. An exhibition that narrates biblical events as a special gallery of Old Testament figures. When describing his “biblical” project Chagall used to say that Vollard had commissioned him “do the prophets”. To Chagall, in fact, the Bible is not the story of the Creation, it is the story of creatures. The exhibition Chagall. The Bible has been produced and organised by the Municipality of Catanzaro and the Department of Culture of the City of Catanzaro with Arthemesia, accomplished with the contribution of the Regione Calabria under the aegis of the Provincial Government of Catanzaro and the vital contribution of Fondazione Cultura e Arte, an instrumentality of Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Internazionale chaired by Professor Emmanuele F. M. Emanuele, thanks to which all the schools in the Province of Catanzaro may enter the exhibition free of charge. In Catania “Chagall. The Bible” is an alliance formed in the name of history and culture since the exhibition also promotes awareness of the ancient presence of Jewish communities in Calabria for the purpose of rediscovering a tangible and intangible cultural heritage, which is of primary importance in defining the identity of Calabria. This cultural heritage is not well-known yet, even though in recent years there has been a gradual increase of archival and archaeological researches that deserve to be used.
