This instrument, at the disposal of the Regina Elena National Cancer Institute of Rome, is equipped with a filter system that allows, diseases such as cancer - in particular gliomas and lymphomas - to be treated by means of fluorescence-guided surgery, thanks the administration of a photosensitizing agent that binds to the tumor before surgery. This allows the surgeon to visualize the neoplastic lesion more clearly; in this way removal of the lesion is more precise and healthy brain tissue is spared. This type of instrument is mainly found in the best Neurosurgery Centers in the world, although the microscope will be used by all the specialist departments at the Regina Elena Institute.
