For the 90th anniversary of his death (Paris,1931), Palazzo Albergati in Bologna hosts an extraordinary exhibition, from October 29th 2021 to March 13th 2022, dedicated to Giovanni Boldini, with over 90 of his magnificent works.
Feminine charm, sumptuous rustling clothes, the Belle Époque, parlors. This is the magnificent world of Giovanni Boldini. A genius painter who, more than any other, was able to revive the rarefied ambiance of an extraordinary era. Literature and fashion, music and luxury, art and bistros meld into the vivacious rhythm of the can-can and create an extraordinary social and civil rebirth.
The retrospective exhibition, Giovanni Boldini - Lo sguardo nell’anima (A Glance into the Soul), which develops along both a chronological and a thematic narrative register, presents a vast selection of works that best express Boldini’s style, his ability to uniquely exalt female beauty and reveal the most intimate and mysterious soul of the noble subjects of that period.
The works – lent out for the exhibition by Museoarchives Giovanni Boldini Macchiaioli in Pistoia, which catalogues the artist’s works; Giovanni Boldini Museum in Ferrara; Nervi Museums - Gallery of Modern Art (GAM) of Genoa; Ca’ la Ghironda - ModernArtMuseum, as well as many public and private collections – include renowned pieces, such as: Mademoiselle De Nemidoff (1908), Portrait of the Actress Alice Regnault (1884), Countess Beatrice Susanna Henriette van Van Bylandt (1903), Countess De Rasty Lying (ca. 1880), and The Voile Blouse (ca. 1906).
However, the exhibition does not stop at Boldini’s international and creative experience but, through several important comparative works, it also presents pieces by contemporary artists like Vittorio Matteo Corcos, Federico Zandomeneghi, Gustave Leonard De Jonghe, Raimundo de Madrazo, Pompeo Massani, Gaetano Esposito, Salvatore Postiglione, José Villegas I Cordero, Alessandro Rontini, Ettore Tito, Cesare Saccaggi, Paul Cesar Helleu, and Giuseppe Giani.
Tiziano Panconi, who is a great expert of Giovanni Boldini’s art, curated the exhibition, which boasts the patronage of the Emilia Romagna Region and the Municipality of Bologna, and is produced and organized by Arthemisia and Poema, in collaboration with the Museoarchives Giovanni Boldini Macchiaoli n Pistoia, under the aegis of the Study Committee for the 90th-year anniversary celebration of the artist’s death (1842-1931).
The anniversary exhibition is, in fact, only a part of the celebrations that were organized for the 90th-year anniversary of Giovanni Boldini’s death. It is supervised by the Study Committee, which was nominated by the Municipality of Ferrara and the Fondazione Ferrara Arte, and is made up of art scholars, chaired by Vittorio Sgarbi, and directed by Tiziano Panconi. Beatrice Avanzi (Mart, Rovereto), Loredana Angiolino, Maria Teresa Benedetti, Pietro Di Natale (Ferrara Arte director), Almerinda Di Benedetto (Luigi Vanvitelli University, Naples), Elena Di Raddo (La Cattolica University, Milan), Leo Lecci (University of Genoa), Marina Mattei, Gioia Mori (Academy of Fine Arts, Rome), and Lucio Scardino are also members of the committee.
The exhibition is sponsored by Ricola and is recommended by Sky Arte. The catalogue, published by Skira, includes an introduction by Vittorio Sgarbi, an institutional greeting by Prof. Emmanuele F. M. Emanuele, President of the Fondazione Terzo Pilastro - Internazionale, with contributions by critics Tiziano Panconi, Leo Lecci, Lucio Scardino, Almerinda Di Benedetto, and Sergio Gaddi.
The Giovanni Boldini - Lo sguardo nell’anima exhibition once again gives way to the “Arte della solidarietà” project, created with Susan G. Komen Italia, charity partner for the exhibition. Merging art with health, beauty, prevention: this is the essence of a project where the color pink of Komen Italia meets the masterpieces on display. A part of the proceeds from the tickets sold for the exhibition will be donated to creating healthcare-related projects. In this specific case, they will be used to purchase several cold caps for preventing hair loss during chemotherapy.
